The Cavapoo – also known as the Cavoodle – originated from a cross between small or dwarf poodles and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Because both breeds are characterized by great friendliness and joy of movement, the Cavapoo is also a friendly, active and lovable companion and family dog. It is now one of the most popular hybrid dogs.
A “Poo” for “Poodle”
People with a dog allergy usually react to the dog’s hair, but sometimes also to saliva. The special coat structure of the poodle prevents shedding, which is why many – but not all! – allergy sufferers do not react to the poodle. Based on the desire to breed other dog breeds with such a coat, poodles have been crossed with other breeds all over the world. The names of these “hybrid breeds” usually contain a “-poo” or a “-doodle” at the end – including the Cavapoo. They are almost always direct descendants of purebred parents. Other generations are rarely found.
The character of the Cavapoo
The Cavapoo has characteristics of both parents. It is never possible to predict which side dominates, which is why a Cavapoo puppy is always a little surprise package. The small or miniature poodle is considered highly intelligent, very cooperative and a little jittery. It has a high degree of urge to move and wants to be occupied. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a bit calmer in nature, very affectionate and sensitive. The mixed breeds of both breeds are mostly human-friendly, clever dogs that fit wonderfully into the lives of their owners. They are happy about joint activities of all kinds – be it a game in the garden, a long walk or cuddling on the couch. So busy, the Cavapoo is a relaxed companion for the whole family. However, if socialization and education are neglected, the mixed breeds can develop into hyperactive and barking roommates who have great problems staying alone.
Education and keeping of the Cavapoo
When two breeds are directly crossed, it is never possible to predict exactly how the puppies will develop. Families who care about the poodle fur, which is often suitable for allergy sufferers, should be very careful when buying a Cavapoo. These dogs can develop both types of fur or a mix. The Cavapoo is always a good-humoured companion dog that is welcome almost everywhere due to its size and cuddly appearance. With good socialisation, education and utilisation, it is ideally suited for living in a city apartment or for a family with small children, which makes it a popular family dog. However, make sure that the little one has a fixed retreat area where he can really sleep in peace. This relaxation is particularly important, as both breeds tend to “over-excite” and then find it difficult to calm down again.
Pflege des Cavapoo
The Cavapoo can also have surprises in store when it comes to fur. Only after changing the puppy and adult coat can the coat structure be definitively determined. Extensive grooming and regular visits to the groomer are essential. The longer the coat, the more important it is that you free your dog from burdocks, sticks and other finds every day and brush them thoroughly. The ears need special care because – if they are closed by hair – inflammation develops.
Special features of the Cavapoo
In the case of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, some hereditary diseases and consequences of overbreeding are known. Due to the crossbreeding of the Poodle genes, these diseases occur less frequently. Nevertheless, it is important to pay attention to reputable breeding and genetically tested parents so that your Cavapoo can reach an age of up to 15 years.
