Pomsky – the lovable miniature husky from America
A small dog, fluffy as a Spitz and noble as a husky: The Pomsky from the USA combines the look of two dog breeds in a compact format. Its attractive appearance and attractive character have earned it the title “King of Toys” in the English-speaking world. In Germany, the Pomsky is still relatively unknown; in recent years, however, the popularity of the mongrel has risen by leaps and bounds.

The history of the Pomsky
The Pomsky is a fairly young dog breed. It is a mixture of Pomeranian and Husky – this explains the name. If you ever hear about a “Huskarian”, the same combination is meant. While the dog breed is so new that there is no breeding standard yet, the “International Pomsky Association” in the country of origin USA offers initial indications of the desired breed standard. This association is also your point of contact for comprehensive information about the dog breed. Important to know: Due to the natural difference in size of the parents, Pomskys are conceived by means of artificial insemination. The mother is always the husky in order to avoid birth problems caused by puppies that are too large.
Character of Pomsky
The Pomsky combines the character strengths of his progenitors: He is cheerful and energetic like a Spitz and at the same time loyal and intelligent like a husky. Pomskys are considered to be equally playful and strong-willed.
The typical Pomsky also has a strong protective instinct and reliably reports special incidents. His liveliness is paired with a certain tendency to impatience.
However: The extent to which the husky or the pointed parts of the character prevail in each case depends on the individual from dog to dog.
Education, keeping and care of the Pomsky
Pomskys are companions for people who like to move, who can accompany them on long walks or during sports. Despite the small format, the animals are enduring and appreciate outdoor activities. In addition, the dog needs a lot of activity to be busy. This makes it suitable for households with families where there is always something going on.
If you compare the training of the Pomsky with that of a purebred husky, many things will be easier for you. The mixed breed is usually easy to train and has a pronounced “will to please”: He wants to please his human.
Grooming the Pomsky is time-consuming, as the coat with dense undercoat and silky top coat should be brushed daily. However, if you playfully accustom the animal to this procedure as a puppy, this is not a problem.
Special features of the Pomsky
The Pomsky is considered a fashion dog. The breeding goal is a small-sized family dog with a sled dog look. Strictly speaking, the dogs are not a new breed, but deliberately bred mixes, a common practice in the USA. The manifestations in which Pomskys show themselves and which in turn depend on the breeding generation are correspondingly diverse. For example, animals of the first generation are still quite (and inconsistently) large; after two further generations (in which Pomskys are mated with each other), the body size settles down to the desired level. It remains to be seen to what extent typical disease dispositions may establish themselves within these breeding lines.
The Pomsky is not yet a recognized dog breed in Germany, accordingly there are no breeder lists kept by the VDH (Association for the German Canine Society). If you are interested in a Pomsky, be sure to convince yourself of the seriousness of the provider.
